2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Updates

The 2017 model of the GMC Sierra 1500 retains its capabilities and overall styling but has some key differences to set it apart from previous years. The exterior color choices have changed with GMC getting rid of Iridium Metallic, Mahogany Metallic, and Light Steel Gray Metallic shades. Instead, they are adding in Dark Slate Metallic and Pepperdust Metallic to this year's choices. All models of the Sierra 1500 also now have a capless fuel fill system unless you delete the pickup box. Other exterior updates you will notice include new all-season black wall tires for improved traction and new tri-mode power steps with rearward articulation to give you access to the bed more comfortably, plus a foot-activated running sideboard for added convenience. Compared to the previous model, the 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 also has some changes specific to the different trims and packages. The Enhanced Driver Alert Package now has a low-speed mitigation package for increased safety. If you get the SLE model, you can no longer get the All-Terrain Package, but you can now get an Elevation Edition. Finally, the SLT Crew Cab's Premium Plus Package now features a trailer brake controller for improved safety while hauling and you now get Android Auto with the 8-inch IntelliLink system.

A Glimpse at the History of the Sierra 1500

GMC has been making pickup trucks since 1918, but the Sierra was a trim level, not a model, until 1988. The Sierra you recognize today arrived in 1999 following a transition of ten years where the Sierra models were just known by their capability designations, 1500, 2500, or 3500. When the 1999 Sierra debuted with its name, there was also a redesign and new engines. These included a 255-horsepower V8 and a 345-horsepower V8, among others. Quadrasteer was an option starting in 2003 with the class-leading turning radius, but it was removed in 2006. By 2006, that generation ended, leaving a vehicle you would probably recognize thanks to its similarities to the pickup of today. The following generation expanded the trim options and got more powerful engines.
